About:

Laurie’s background includes many years of competitive and professional artistic performance work, coupled with Physical Education and Exercise Leadership/Personal Training in the Fitness Industry. After having logged in tens of thousands of hours in a multitude of exercise/strength/dance-fitness/yoga modalities, Laurie turned to Pilates. At first, developing a Pilates practice was to rehabilitate her body from chronic overuse syndromes of her past athletic endeavors, and the recent pre-natal/post-partum years. However, it didn’t take long for Pilates to become her mainstream training modality used to help hundreds of clients. Fifteen years later, she has never looked back. Rather than finding Pilates to be a popular fad, it has become a way of life for her and her clients.

Laurie’s professional credentials include the gold standard of Trainer Certifications that requires 30 hours of professional continuing education every year: American College of Sports Medicine Exercise Physiologist. She also holds a B.S. in Physical Education and Exercise Science earned from the University of Iowa. During her thirty-plus year fitness career, Laurie has trained and earned certification in multiple modalities in the strength and conditioning/athletic development/Spinning/Kick-boxing/Yoga and dance field.

Laurie’s professional training in STOTT PILATES covered all levels and all studio equipment and props over a span of seven years. Becoming fully Certified in the STOTT PILATES Method in 2012 was and continues to be an honor for Laurie. Laurie is considered to be among a select group of highly trained professional Pilates Instructors recognized in the industry. Several thousand hours of training and continuing education is required to achieve and maintain this status. Through her vast array of training and personal experience, Laurie is able to work with a variety of clients, many of whom have special needs and considerations to accommodate.

Helping clients develop better alignment, breathing, body mechanics and flow of movement over time come from a very systematic approach. “Pilates is a slow and steady approach that helps us build stronger bodies, improved posture and stability, and hence, function. For me, Pilates has improved my lifestyle, broadening my choice of activity, and has kept me in the game of life and sport, even with diagnosis of severe osteo-arthritis in my hip joints”, says Berggren.

Laurie has served as the TFC Fitness Director since 1988, the year she helped our racquet club open its very own fitness center. She resides in Oak Park with her husband Steve, TFC General Manager and their three teenage children, AJ, Angie and Jenny.
